The short answer: PTE Academic is Pearson’s computer-based English test for people who need to demonstrate listening, reading, speaking and writing skills. It is taken at a secure Pearson Test Center, uses a computer and headset, and is completed in one two-hour session.

Who is PTE Academic for?

PTE Academic is designed for people applying to study, work or migrate where an English-language score is required. Pearson states that it is accepted by thousands of institutions globally and is approved for Australian, New Zealand and UK visa and migration routes. Your destination, institution, course and visa category determine which test is appropriate, so confirm the exact requirement directly before booking.

PTE Academic UKVI uses the same test format, but it provides the Unique Reference Number needed for relevant UK visa applications. For some UK applications, that distinction matters.

The current PTE Academic format

The test has three parts and assesses all four language skills. It uses integrated tasks too: for example, Reading & Writing: Fill in the Blanks contributes to more than one skill area. Pearson’s published section ranges are shown below; the total session is two hours.

Speaking & Writing: what you will meet

This section includes Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarize Group Discussion, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Written Text and Write Essay. The Personal Introduction helps you get familiar with the technology but does not contribute to your score.

The newer interactive tasks are worth knowing precisely. In Respond to a Situation, you read and listen to an everyday situation, have 10 seconds to prepare, then speak for 40 seconds. Summarize Group Discussion asks you to give a spoken summary after listening to a discussion.

Reading and Listening: build accuracy under time pressure

The Reading section includes two fill-in-the-blanks formats, multiple-choice questions, Reorder Paragraph and single-answer multiple choice. The Listening section includes Summarize Spoken Text, multiple-choice tasks, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words and Write from Dictation. Audio and video prompts play automatically and are heard once, so structured note-taking and focused listening matter.

How scoring and results work

PTE Academic reports an overall score from 10 to 90, plus communicative-skill scores. Scores are graded against Pearson’s Global Scale of English (GSE), and Pearson publishes information relating PTE Academic scores to CEFR levels. Your Score Report and Skills Profile are intended to show both performance and areas to develop.

Pearson says scores are typically available within 48 hours. Once available in your myPTE account, you can share digital scores with institutions without a fee. Always check the score requirement and score-validity policy of the institution or authority you are applying to.

A smart PTE Academic preparation plan

1. Confirm your goal. Check the exact score and test type required by your university, employer or visa pathway.
2. Learn the official format first. Practise only after you know what each task asks you to do and how much time you have.
3. Diagnose your starting point. Identify whether pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading speed, listening accuracy or writing structure needs the most attention.
4. Practise timed sets. Build confidence at the same pace and on the same computer-and-headset setup you will use at the test center.
5. Review deliberately. Track recurring errors and turn them into a short weekly focus list instead of simply repeating questions.
6. Use full mocks carefully. Simulate the complete two-hour experience and leave time to improve between attempts.
